Today started out beautifully: little wind, a slight chill, and many folks on the trail enjoying the holiday weekend. John’s knees had been giving him some trouble each day, but today the left proved especially troublesome. We redistributed some weight on the bikes and continued to our first break in Günzburg. While there we took the opportunity to adjust the seat height on his bike (as a google search pointed to improper seat height as a cause of knee pain), and that seems to have helped. We took more frequent breaks, which helped as well. The wind started to pick up, and it grew colder and a bit darker as we entered Dillingen for lunch, where we had some really mediocre pizza – I love that the “American-Style” pizza features corn, and we learned that peperoni here refers to peperocini peppers. Saw all the folks in their Sunday best leaving Pentecost services. As we hit the road again, we weren’t sure if the weather was going to hit us or not, and John’s knees were still a question mark…then his derailleur started giving problems again. At Höchstådt we decided that discretion was the better part of valor, and caught a train to Regensburg, to allow time for bodies to heal and find a proper mechanic…which may probe difficult since Monday is a holiday. Got a hotel outside the city center for about half of a closer one, ate at a Chinese buffet for dinner, chatted with loved ones back home, and crashed.
